Thanks for the replies.  To clarify, Greg and I are on pretty much 
the same track:  a pair of push-type solenoids.  I envision 
epoxying the male part (the part with the threads that goes in the 
socket in the camera) of a cable release directly onto the 
solenoid and then filing/adapting the pin of the solenoid to reach 
the shutter release mechanism inside the socket.  There would be
one of these for each camera.
