The local Target strore sells Bushnell "PowerView LiteVision" 4x30
binoculars for $16.99.  These are a simple Galilean opera glass design
with achromatic objectives that are 32mm in dia. and ~90mm focal
length.  With my eyesight accomodation, the field of view is a little
more than a 3 inch diameter circle at ~3.8x (using 1 + 250/f), YMMV.  As
magnifiers, the image quality of these objectives is not bad - just a
little pincushion distortion at the edges.  This might be a fairly
inexpensive option for you.
