  Well our family never really did the listening
in thing. Though you often set the received
down beside the phone so that you could hear when the
other people hung up (so you could make your call). For
you city people's information, there was a separate
button you pulled up to get dial tone.

  But a lot of the neighbors always had the
receiver off so that they could hear when
any calls were made. It made the voice at
the other end hard to hear sometimes with
so many phones listening in. There were
7 families on our party line though we only
hear the ringing of 4 of them. Our ring was
two long, one short.
