Don't get mixed up with dpi and ppi, they really have nothing in common.

What is more important is lpi vs. ppi.
Now that that is out of the way...

..ok, dots per inch, pixels per inch, and lines per inch.

dots per inch is just an average number of dots of ink that the printer
puts on the media.
the more dots and the smaller they are the less you will see them.

pixels per inch is the exact number of pixels that the image file
contains. The more pixels the bigger the print can be.

lines per inch, well, i don't know exactly what this number represents
but what is important is that this number multiplied by 2 is what the
pixels per inch should be. I go slightly over with 200 ppi on my epson
stylus photo because the manufacturer left out the lpi in the
documentation.
