Yes, we VR photographers do use wide angle lens, but we are the exception to
the rule.

VR photographers have an unusual problem, to put a heck of a lot of
information into the smallest file size possible so that it can be viewed on
the web. A longer lens will often provide for a better image with more
detail, but what good is it if it takes an hour to download. Nobody will
wait to see it. The problem with a wide angle lens is that you get a lot of
sky and ground with a little line through the middle of the subject matter.

If it's commercial stock photography or exhibition prints that you are
after, the longer the lens, the bigger the image, the better.
