I have just bought an HP Photosmart. I also bought an Epson FS200 which
I took back and exchanged for the HP.

The HP is fabulous. I have achieved results which come within a hairs
breadth of the resolution of professionally made PhotoCD scans (at a
cost of about $15 a scan!) If you start off with a sharp tranny its
great.

Another thing worth pointing out which, to my mind, makes the HP
particularly good is that there is third party shareware which can drive
the scanner faster, and more flexibly for instance it handles panoramic
negs. It can also help with the "stitch it together" type of panoramas
as it enables "exposure lock" when needed so that you can scan with a
consistent setting.

Have fun
