Scanning head probably has 1,000 sensors/scanned inch. By stepping the
head at 1/2 the sensor pitch rate provides 2,000 captures/inch...

Yep. Try looking at a 300x300 dpi scan on a 640x400 screen. Images
looks vertically stretched.

Just tha scan resolution and screen resolution have completely different
meanings.
