Dan:
I have the PowerLookIIIse scanner and also checked into the
PowerLook 3000 prior to making my purchase.
IMHO, the major problem with the 3000 (besides the heavy price!) is
that:
1. In the 3Kx3K hi res mode, it will cover only 3.4". This prevents
any 4X5 or larger negs from being scanned in hi res. Major design
oversight!!!
Other comparisons are:
1. The IIIse will do up to 3.4D and the 3000 will do 3.6D optical
density. (almost same).
2. Scanning mode for both is 24/42 bits per pixel
3. Highlight/Shadow rating for both is 256 steps.
4. In/Output buffer on III is 3MB and 2MB on 3000.
5. Price for IIIse is about $1015. and the 3000 is about $5750
(today's street prices).
7. The IIIse just took a substantial price reduction from almost
$3,000 and represents a super value today. The 3000 is still quite
pricey.
Concluding opinion:
I feel that for superior home scanning, the IIIse is the way to go.
The scans of the 3000 will be better primarily due to the moving
flatbed system (assuming your scanning small subject negs) but still
not anywhere near the quality of a professional drum scanner. For
90% of my needs, the IIIse meets my needs. For my pro needs, I
will use a pro drum scanning service.
Hope this helps.
Lawrence
