scanning slides

I am after some advice wrt scanning slides.
A friend of mine has a UMAX ASTRA 1220s scanner with the slide attachment
but they are not able to get satisfactory results. Is there anyone out there
who has used one of these (or similar) who might have some clues or tricks
to using it with better results. Any hints appreciated.
