Unauthorized use of picture...

I just discover one of my pan pictures (not a picture of bread :-) from my
website was used without my knowledge and authorization by a very commercial
local newspaper in California. They seriously cropped the picture but I
still recognize the small part that they used anyway. I will give them the
benefit of proving that the picture is their but I doubt if they can do it
without reshooting it at the exact spot that I did and without having
something in the environment changed. The newspaper is a weekly and has a
circulation of 25000. I don't want to sue them, I just want to ask for a
fair compensation. However, I am not a professional photographer so I don't
know what a fair price would be for this particular case. Can anyone suggest
a website that has some pricing guidelines and a website with good copyright
information. All suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.
