Edinburgh Camera, RE: camera obscura threatened

I visited the Camera in Edinburgh last Sept. It's alive and well with hourly
tours. Great views, one of the highest points in the city. On the royal mile
with views of the castle.

This was the only camera obscura I've been to. I was expecting a pinhole
camera projecting on a wall.

The Edinburgh camera has a lens located in the roof projecting to a
white(slightly concave) table below. The table is about a meter across and 5
meters below the lens. A movable diagonal mirror above the lens allows the
operator to direct the camera's view in any direction they like.

I found this web page about it. http://brightbytes.com/cosite/2edinb.html

When I was in their gift shop there was a pamphlet for sale that listed all
the Camera Obscuras in the world. I thought there were about 50 cameras in
the list.

Thanks for this info Simon. I hope it's not considered
'off-topic'. I
believe there is still a Camera Obscura in Edinburgh.
Perhaps Scottish
members would care to comment. There used to be one on Mt
Dandenong east
of Melbourne. I haven't been up there for some years but I
have feeling it
		was demolished.
