Steve- The spring interior gets graphite-not oil. The gear bearings get
oil, including the brass top bearing  on the spring housing. The gear teeth
should not be oiled- just the bearings.

Did yours twist? what happened?
Clock oil works well , as well as sewing machine oil. Jamie
