The internationally-recognized Coupeville Arts Center announces its first
panoramic photography workshop, "Introduction to Panoramic Photography" with
International Association of Panoramic Photographers member M. Denis Hill
instructing. The April 28-30, 2000 class will provide a combination of
classroom instruction and location photography on magnificent Whidbey
Island, Washington.
Students will gain hands-on experience with a variety of professional and
unconventional panoramic photography gear: rotational, swing lens, and wide
field cameras, as well as essential accessories. They will develop a
personal roadmap to the panoramic equipment, techniques, and output that
match their interests. Discussion will include composition, renting
equipment, electronic uses of panoramic photography, immersive environments
and large color display printing methods.
Students will use specialty cameras [XPan (with 45mm, 90mm, and maybe 30mm),
Noblex 135U, and Lookaround] in an inspiring setting during morning and
afternoon field trips to the Coupeville waterfront, Ebey's Prairie National
Historic Reserve, and Fort Casey. Photogenic landmarks in the area include
the Coupeville Wharf and Victorian waterfront area, Admiralty Head
Lighthouse, Mount Baker, Penn Cove, Fort Casey coastal artillery
emplacements, the Olympic range, farms, Fort Ebey, and the Deception Pass
bridge. Hill reports that local wildlife often cooperates with
photographers: Bald eagles, gray whales and Orcas are known to frequent the
area. Penn Cove is also home port to a pair of gaff-rigged schooners and
North America’s largest mussel farm.
A Coupeville resident and Arts Center board member, Hill cites his "local
influence" in securing a late April date for the class. "Spring color adds a
welcome accent to the green fir forests, blue water, blue sky and puffy
white clouds that make Whidbey Island an artists’ paradise. Sprouting crops
in the fields also add their own hues to the island palette," he reports.
"It’s no accident that Coupeville is home to a respected institution like
the Coupeville Arts Center that attracts hundreds of artists every year for
instruction in photography, painting, fiber arts and other media."
