You are very right I did it this whay for years. BUT for $108.00 life was.  made much easier. Set it pan  it it stops pan it stops perfect each time. The right overlap each time. As I cut the negs and than mount them togather and make a Platinum print the pan head was from the Gods. James Romeo

Can you divide into thirds? Good, then you do not need 
to buy a special pan head for your Noblex, Widelux, or 
Horizon. All that you need to do is to mark the "pan" 
on your tripod into thirds. Look at your tripod, it 
may already be marked. If yours is marked by degrees 
"3rds" would be 120 degree apart. 
 
Set up your tripod with the camera on one of the 
"3rds" marks, shoot and move to the next, shoot and 
move to the next, shoot. You are done. It's that easy 
and it didn't cost a dime!
