see http://www.smu.edu/~rmonagha/mf/permits.html - there are a 
surprisingly large number of places you can't take photos or have to pay 
fees for photo taking permission - up to $5,000 US for Versaille etc ;-)

Personally, I think there would be a lot less of these restrictions if we 
started seeing travel magazine articles about places where you can't take 
photos - but as it is now, except for the internet, the only way to find 
out is to already be there... ;-(
