Oprah Winfrey loses round in Chicago court

                  July 27, 2000
Web posted at: 3:45 PM EDT (1945 GMT)

CHICAGO (Reuters) -- Talk show host Oprah
Winfrey has lost a round in a suit brought by two
freelance photographers who claimed she unfairly
used some of their pictures in a book.

Judge Ruben Castillo of the U.S. District Court in
Chicago ruled that the photographers alone created
the pictures and hold their copyrights.

Whether Winfrey erred in using 11 photos shot by
Stephen Green and Paul Natkin without their
permission in her 1996 book "Make the
Connection" will be determined later by a jury trial
                  in the same court.

The two photographers were hired by Winfrey's
production company to shoot
thousands of photos of her over several years for
publicity purposes.

Castillo handed down the ruling Tuesday. The jury
trial is set for August 14.
