I built one once. Just about as you describe. The big problem is it needs a
huge amount of light so it gets way too hot. Perhaps with fiber optic light
pipes it might work.  The unit would be large and expensive. Mine had a
spinning lens and 90 degree mirror spinning in the middle behind a
stationary glass cylinder film plane. The lamp projected down from the top.
The fun part was balancing the lens. It wanted to tear it loose from the
motor. I got it to project a dim 360 picture. The next trick is figuring a
mechanism to change slides. It is far more practical to chop up the pan and
use several projectors.
