I too had the problem of needing a custom negative
carrier for my 4x5 enlarger. I had an extra 35mm
carrier that I took out to the garage. I spray glued a
6x12 negative in place and then drilled through both
layers of metal in the corners. I then used a hand
coping saw with a metal cutting saw to carfully cut
down line of the negative. I used a fine flat file and
some fine sand paper to smooth the edges. I then used
a "magic marker" to take the shine off the bare metal
edges, followed by two coats of BBQ flat spray paint.

I wanted full frame prints so I made the opening
slightly larger than the image size. The edges are not
perfectly streight, but that is fine with me. I left
in a few microscopic nicks from the file too. I get
that artsy fartsy one of a kind look, not something
mass produced from a machine. If I want a clean look I
simply crank up the enlarger and print full frame. The
job took my about half an hour.

If you need a negative carrier in a hurry or for just
one image, then try black plastic that is used for
report covers. It is cheap, available at every office
supply store, soft, stiff, and can easly be cut. You
can use tape as a hinge and to hold the negative in
place.
