What is a panoramic photo?

Howdy,
Along the line of "How do you make a pano photo?" is what is a panoramic
photo. Obviously everyone has seen the current most popular use of the
word: cropping a regular 35mm frame from an 8"x12" enlargement to a 4"x12".
So is a panorama a wider angle than normal, giving you more to look at. Or
is it a format, a thinner than normal rectangle? If I'm using a 6cm x 17cm
camera with a 45mm lens, that's obviously a pano, but is it still a pano with
the 300mm lens? Does the word panorama imply horizontal?
