Yes and no. :-)

They *are* often called stereopticons, but really a stereopticon is an
obsolete commercial 2D magic lantern (slide projector) that holds two slides
and allows a "dissolve" from one slide to the other. 

The proper name for the card viewer is stereoscope, or "Holmes stereoscope",
after Oliver Wendell Holmes, the inventor.
