Actually, that brings to mind another point which is that 2D screens 
have much better reflection characteristics than an ordinary silver 
screen.  They deliver more light to the audience and less to the 
ceiling and walls.  8-)  So it may be that the shutter glasses are 
brighter because they can be used with a brighter screen.  I haven't
seen a standard movie screen up close but I presume they're not 
lenticular.  If they are, a lenticular silver would probably do 
pretty well and the advantage in that case might go back to the 
polarized glasses.  On the other other hand, if silver lenticulars
of that size are a very special order, their price may be too high.
