The CSCC has 3 classes of competition, B, A and AA.  Cardboard, including
commercially mounted (e.g., Kodalux), is allowed in the introductory
classification B, although most are entered in glass.  Glass-mounted slides
are "required" in the other 2 classes, although RBT mounts are also
fine.  The idea is to encourage higher quality slides having precision
mounting, and the precision masks are considered superior to cardboard,
which can warp, etc.  The glass offers dust and thermal protection to
the chips as well.

These rules date back to the founding of the club in the 1950's, which
is why the RBT mounts are not specifically addressed but allowed.
