Chucksum match? Vertical alignment?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a checksum match and how can I catch one?

Question for Elliott:  Can this ultralevel thing be attached vertically
to a stereo camera?  I think Jon Golden can use one in this position to 
make sure that some of his more or less non-tranditional 3-d shots are
perfectly vertical.  ;)
