Aligning VM chips

>Is it possible to remount a factory mounted V-M chip back onto a reel so that

A year or so ago I was so skeptical of the oft-quoted (at that time)
statement that it was impossible to make a VM reel without a VM camera
that I tried it. I cut down a Realist chip pair to about the right
size. I split apart a VM reel and taped the chips into the windows
and resealed it. To align the chips correctly first, I placed a regular
VM reel onto a normal Realist mounting gauge on a light table to get the
proper horizontal spacing of the near and far objects for a reel. Then I
taped my VM reel half down and aligned my chips and taped them, although
I could have glued them.

Anyway, you might be able to use a regular mounting gauge to re-align
the original chips sufficiently.

Now that I proved my point about making VM reels from Realist chips, I
can tell you that I'm never going to do that again! Too much work.
