I don't know if this will keep you from eating, but hit every thrift shop and 
school surplus sale you can.  I have found silvered screens at almost every one 
in the SF bay area for less than $15 each.  I noted the same thing when I was 
back visiting my family in OH.  Keep looking for a little longer.  I don't know 
what painting a screen silver will do, but the lenticular design of he silver 
screens I have seen must help significantly or they wouldn't all have them.
