You can get camera bags that are 18% gray, as well.

Meter off your palm. If using an SLR, leave it set at the same focus
as you'd use, to avoid lens extension.

John Shaw has a "rule of thumb" that I find useful - paraphrasing,
about how to remember which way to make the 1 f/stop correction:

"You have to open your hand up to take a meter reading, so you must
open up the lens to compensate for the 1 f/stop difference"

I use this a lot - it really works! And it is not very race-dependent,
as you might think it would be.
