The rise and demise of 3D
Hello all.
I had a bit of a cocktail party last Saturday and showed several people the
Realist work I've been doing, some seeing it for the very first time. People
were very taken by the images. Not a person stared into the red-button
without their jaw dropping with a "wow!" or "that's so cool!" I was asked
several times why this format disappeared. People actually seemed angry
about it! I had no good answer. Is there one? What forces led to the
demise of popular 3-d photography? What led to its rise in the first place?
What kind of role was seen for 3-d at it's height?
Also, this week, I got my 4th roll of Realist film back. I shot some of this
with 3d@xxxx in mind, and I'm truly happy with my work for the first time so
far. I successfuly implemented everything I learned with rolls 1-3, and
accurately predicted what each photo would look like based on d.o.f, f-stop,
etc. Very exciting. Unfortunately, there was a problem with my favorite
shots, and I don't know why. I took many of these shots after the blizzard
when everything was snow white and the sun was blazingly bright. I stopped
several shots all the way down to f22, and they are exposed beautifully, with
sharp, deep blacks and great color. However, in each of these a red bar
appears down the left hand side of the slide... some kind of light leak? Why
only on my f22 shots? Coincidence? I really would like to know so I could
squeeze 1 more roll out before 3d@xxxx, and come ever closer to perfection.
As for the Viewmaster thing. I was telling a friend about the viewmaster
format
and he said, "I didn't know the Viewmaster was in 3-D!" Now, he hadn't seen
a VM for about 10 years, but it's not likely he would forget that a Realist
slide was in 3D.
