In Digest 1136 Re: The rise and fall of 3d, Yiing Lin wrote "(I've never taken a stereo pair before!!) I make no apologies for it, though, as the life of a student (at least mine) just doesn't allow for it."
Yiing, for my money, no apologies are needed. The fact that you spend part of your time helping Photo-3D run smoothly is certainly appreciated by me and I would believe by many others. I remember when I first subscribed to Photo-3D that you helped resolve the problem which was causing my attempts to post to bounce. Remembering my college days (back in the dark ages),I can empathize with any student's time restraints. It was recently mentioned that you will be graduating soon hence would no longer continue as one of the moderators. I truly hope that you will be able to continue to read and post to Photo-3D after your official duties are done. Perhaps you can inform us when you take your first stereo pair, whether with a classic stereo camera, shoot and shift with an SLR, or whatever. Anyone who can create 3D computer images can also create 3D photo images.
A number of 3Ders have responded to your original questions very aptly with answers ranging from extremely sophisticated scientific uses of 3D to those that are just plain everyday fun. Yiing, have you ever looked at Keystone Viewcard (stereograph) #16648 "The Full Moon, Yerkes Observatory" taken in the 1920's(?) and wondered how this fascinating photograph was done? Using the 1 to 30 rule, the cameras and telescopes should have been nearly 7000 miles apart. Perhaps your computer imaging skills may have answered such questions.
Before I ramble too much, I hope you actively stay involved in 3D. Look at stereographs, look at stereo slides, join NSA to get Stereo World which has such interesting images ranging from Stereo Viewcards to computer imaging and, definitely, continue to subscribe to Photo-3D.
Best wishes to you in your activities after graduation.
