Dick... I bet that even at the age of 7 you stopped
to think what you were doing.  Automation has brought the "I don't bother
to think attitude".  Low prices, "easy to use" cameras, cheap 1 hour
processing, all these conveniences have reduced our standards and increased
the waste.  I remember my brother and I were very proud of our instamatic
cameras and B&W prints.  Photography (film and processing) was expensive
back then and we were thinking twice before pressing the shutter... 
Lack of automation and high prices helped us develop a feeling for good
photography.  I like stereo photography because it works the same way.-- GAT
