Chinon CyberShades

The continuing saga of affordable PC stereoscopic display systems.
In my last post I was considering two possible LC shutter glasses
systems: the 3D-Max and the Chinon CyberShades. I wanted to purchase
one of these systems to replace my hacked Sega LC glasses with
something better (more resolution settings, faster refresh for less
flicker, etc). The 3D-Max glasses were rumored to soon be distributed
in North America by Reveal multimedia, but January came and went with
out an announcement from Reveal, so I purchased the Chinon CyberShades.

   ---- Warning -- Warning ----

The Chinon CyberShades package gives you no, none, zero, nada, nothin...
I repeat NO utilities for viewing your own stereo images.

The following is IMHO:
They are the same as the Sega glasses, run from the parallel port, and use
the video memory page switching that the Sega glasses use. In short, for
about $200 I bought what I already had. I did get a few "Doom" style
games, but they have excessive displacement and give me a headache.
The best game (Descent) doesn't even ship with the glasses, you have to
mail away for it. The games aren't full versions either, just shareware.
I think Chinon underestimated us.

At this point I would recommend either Michael Stark's StereoPro for $150
or the 3D-Max glasses. Check out the StereoPro at http://www.stereospace.com
Check out the 3D-Max glasses at http://pcvr.kasan.co.kr
Both of these other LC glasses ship with utilities for viewing your stereo
pairs and or stereoscopic animation files. The StereoPro is functionally
the same as the Sega glasses or the CyberShades, the 3D-Max claims to
allow higher scan rates (less flicker) by connecting to your video board's
VESA feature connector (my video board doesn't have one, so I bought the
CyberShades, and I'm not a happy camper, I should have bought a new video
board and the 3D-Max system.
 Wanted to let ya know.
