If I recall you said you preferred the look of the
Super Duplex 120. There are several possible reasons
for this. One is that 120 stocks could different. In theory
a given film should be the same just in a larger size but
one could have a batch difference working here.
However, I think it more likely that the differences come
from either lens quality or film size or a combination of
the two.
In the lens dept. it could be that the 120 has a sharper
more contrasty lens (in spite of the 2.8's reputation). The
sharpness and especially the contrast will give an image
the "snap" that most people seem to prefer. This effect will
be most pronounced when working with the same roll of film
(most likely in 2d) or the same format.
Now add to that the larger size. In 120 the same film will
appear less grainy because the image is so much larger relative
to the grain than in 35. It will thus appear sharper and have a
smoother tonal range and thus have more "snap".
I see this effect all the time with motion picture film. The same
image shot with the same stock on 16mm with a very sharp lens
will still not have the "snap" of 35mm. Even if the lens on the 35
isn't as sharp.
Hope this helps.
Tim
