When I was a kid (back during the Civil War :-) we had a nice beaten
copper serving tray that my mom used quite a bit. The only problem was
that she liked it shiny and it was always tarnishing (as copper has
a tendency to do). 

One night one of us kids spilled some original coke onto it and it
sat overnight - surprise - next morning it was shiny where the coke
had been. From then on, she always "polished" it by pouring in a 
couple of bottles and letting them sit for awhile :-)
