etymology

I think on this list it would be good to stick to the conventional 
meanings of words for clarity but remember that there would be no 
such thing as etymology if words didn't evolve and that certainly 
includes the evolution of meaning.  I think the misuse of the word 
"stereopticon" will eventual cease in the general public.  Not so 
sure if "beamsplitter" will die unless someone comes up with a good 
name for this stereo device.  How about "image splitter"?  I was 
thinking it splits the image on the film giving a result like a split 
screen TV.  I guess that's not very good either.  The problem is that 
the device is not close kin to a split image rangefinder and this 
might cause confusion.  Thoughts?
