Yes, binaural phase/intensity differences only give you the
left/right direction to the source. I think detecting the
up/down direction is much more complicated & depends on how
sounds coming in from different directions are reflected inside
the pinnae (those big flaps of cartilage on the sides of the
head), & it appears to vary a fair amount from person to person.
I think there's someone on the list who knows a lot about this
stuff, but I can't remember who. Anyone?
