Re: Macro/hypo question
#
# I took some slidebar macro stereos the other night using my
#SRL and 50 mm lens with lens reverser. One problem I had was
#figuring out how far to move the camera between exposures. If
#I use the 1 in 30 rule is it 1/30 of the distance from object
#to the front of the lens, film plane, or some intermediate point?
#It makes a big difference when the front of the lens is 4" from
#the object and the film plane is about 7".
#
# I know that you want 1.3 mm (or whatever the number is) of
#on film deviation but I am not enough of an optical guru to
#figure out what that means for my setup. If someone could help
#me with a formula or table I would appreciate it.

Greg:
I have a table in the WEB 3d tutorial which I believe originally
appeared in "The Stereo Realist Manual" by W. D. Morgan and H. M Lester
(about 1954). This table recommends what amounts to a 1/15 rule from
the lens of the Realist to the subject.
Work I have done with a 35mm camera and a Tamron 90mm macro lens
tends to agree with that. I did some macro shooting recently, and
"bracketed" around a 1/30 guideline, and I found that most shots had
too little "depth", until my bracketing would approach the 1/15
figure from Morgan and Lester.
I measured from the front lens element. I'd suggest you do the
same, but perhaps bracket around the 1/15 rule instead. Let us know
how it comes out!
