Realist viewer lenses

On last week's subject of making a viewer that would "blow
away a 50's viewer":
Just looking at my new Edmund Scientific catalog. They sell
some Hastings Triplet Achromats. For $34.60 you can get a lens
with 23 mm dia and 40.3 mm EFL. The Back FL is 33.9 mm and the
center thickness is 18 mm. They don't appear to be AR coated.
The catalog blurb says "provides the ultimate in distortion-
free, color-correct viewing" and "computer-designed ...
contributing to the reduction or elimination of pin-cushion
distortion and chromatic or shperical aberrations".
So are these any better than the two element units in
a red button viewer?
Greg
