Projecting with or without glasses

HELLO MIKE!
I just though I would add my experiences with a concept that I am suprised
more people have not tried....and I think would be helpful to all
projectionists....I hope!
>I have never seen a projectionist making changes
without wearing glasses and I never do.
>I would argue that it's nearly impossible to project *with* >glasses and
have success. One needs to see *both* images simultaneously, and make
split-second adjustments accordingly. (Theoretically, a computer comparing
the L/R images could do this very well.)
>The projectionist, however, would have to know from experience what outcome
results from what adjustments. And, of course, the projectionist should have
the glasses handy to check the results.
MY RESPONSE IS:
When I project....I have a pair of glasses that have been modified such that
the inner quarter of the plastic lens, of the right eye, has the polarizing
filter set to what the outer 3/4 left eye piece has..........and the inner
quarter of the left eye has the polarizing filter set to what the outer 3/4
right eye piece has.
So now you ask WHY?......well read on projection brothers and sisters of the
3-D realm!!!
I have all flameproof "Themelisuit" on and here I go
....I subscribe to the theory of making adjustments during
projection.....sorry, but in a perfect world....we would all be using the
same slide mounts....and we would all be mounting to the same
tolerances.....no go here on earth however.
I use the Brackett Dissolver, which has twice the parameters to adjust,
compared to any single projector, because it is two projectors in one unit,
so there can be some serious knob twiddling going on.
I also like to "enjoy" my own projection....and I make extremely fast
adjustments, in response to the problems that may arise with a slide (ask Dr
T or Bob Brackett).
On top of desiring to "enjoy" my own projection....if I have to focus, I want
to use BOTH EYES to see the image when I focus....and I know John B, Elliot,
Joel or Eric G are in the wings with the scientific reasons for this, but I
feel I see much CLEARER with both eyes.
How many times have we witnessed people looking in to a good 3-D viewer and
seeing their first stereo images...and they gasp and say "these are so crisp
and sharp" because they are using both eyes to examine the image, and most
flat slide viewing loops (not all...I said most) only provide for one eye.
Is there not a difference here....John, Elliot, Joel, Eric G....save me
from this...dont let them lock me up!!
OK....stop steaming....now back top those silly glasses!
I'll repeat the first paragraph so you have it fresh:
When I project....I have a pair of glasses that have been modified such that
the inner quarter of the plastic lens, of the right eye, has the polarizing
filter set to what the outer 3/4 left eye piece has..........and the inner
quarter of the left eye has the polarizing filter set to what the outer 3/4
right eye piece has.
Therefore....when I look straight ahead at the screen....I see the image as
the audience sees it, with polarizers set to vertical and horizontal optimum
for stereo separation. But if I want to check one image.....I just turn my
head to the right a bit.....and look out of the corner of BOTH my eyes and
BOTH eyes see only one of the images....so I can check focus.....then I flip
my head to the left and check only the other image...and both eyes can check
focus on that one.
VERTICALS, HORIZONTALS, ROTATIONAL PROBLEMS- if I move my head back and
forth, (you only have to rotate your head about about 45 degrees to the left
or right of center to do this) I can L-R-L-R-L back and forth and see
differences between both images pretty easily......although I usually just
nod down and view/peer over the glasses to see both images....but the glasses
tell more than no glasses because you can do the L-R-L-R with both
eyes...rapidly....cannot check minor differences without glasses.
Finally....how can one possibly check ghosting if they have no glasses on?
Unless Elliot, Dr.T, or John B can devise a surgical implant that measures
separation extremeties of the L-R overlapping images.....forget it
guys....and you thought viewers were expensive!! Get a life and a chumsuk
with an LED leveller on it...call Harry Poster...he has 'em in the rare green
bakelite version with the original logo that looks like Dr. T's belly button!
AT NSA in Atlanta....I was hanging out a lot on the projection platform with
Ron Labbe....helping with sound....but sometimes I would feel a little eye
strain....or see a little blur.....and you can bet that I could beat him to
the punch on which projector was in need of focus, even though they had
autofocus, sometimes we had to tweak on the fly, just by doing my A-B-A-B or
L-R-L-R.
Also at NSA....I actually projected a show for someone else, in the Brackett,
I had never seen the show, so they cued me by touching my knee when they
wanted a slide change... (there was a music soundtrack and they follwed that
to cue me). There were a few slides that needed remounting...and I literally
could A-B-A-B them in a split second....adjust for best projection, let
everyone enjoy the image, get the next one on the screen by dissolve, and
then give the problem slide to the person while whispering "needs
remounting, we'll check it out afterward" ....all the time, the show went on
uninterrupted.
Now I am not going to take any credit for this 3-D glass concept....it is one
that Bob Brackett (genius, sweetheart of a guy, and married to Lorraine who
makes killer chocolate cookies!) showed me....and I have been using for years
now. Anyone can make a pair themselves by take two pairs of any polarizes
glasses that you can get the lenses out of, go back to my original paragraph
describing the setup of the filters.....cut carefully and experiment with
what works for your eyes so that you get 100% separation when you look
straight ahead....and 100% of one image or the other when you look 45 degrees
off center axis.
ANOTHER SIMPLE BUT BRILLIANT BRACKETT INVENTION!
BETTER LIVING THROUGH GOOD MOUNTING AND PROJECTING...
HEY I AM OUT OF HERE....TIME TO SNOOOZE. JON GOLDEN
