viewing Stereo pictures with mirrors

Around 1950 our local newspaper, every night, printed black and white
pictures side by side. These could be viewed by placing a small mirror between
them and using one eye to look at one picture whilst the other eye loked at the
other picture via the mirror. If the mirror was correctly placed an 
excellent stereoscopic effect was obtained. I have never seen or read about
this technique since then and as ,no doubt, like everything else it originated
in the states I wonder if anyone can tell me more about it. one of the
pictures must have been printed in reverse  to align correctly in the mirror.
