Names and Addresses; protecting your 3D goodies.

Two points of thought on including your Name and City in your E-mail.

1) For us honest folk: It's great to know who you are and where you live.
2) For them who are not honest: It's great to know who you are and where you
live.

If you have ever posted your name and address, and if you are listed in the
phone directory, NEVER post any E-mail that includes information that you are
going to be out of town on some date in the future. (Let us know your travel
details when you get back)

Have you told the world your going to be at some convention or photo
exhibition? Communicate this info to people you "know" you can trust by
phone, or private E-mail , but don't post it on the board.

Obviously you own a computer, and lots of camera stuff. My lifelong career
has been working for a security system business (I'm in the computer,
telecommunications, and office systems areas). Honest folks need reminding
now and again that there are people "out there" who make their lifelong
career one of learning who isn't going to be home and they make your home
theirs (by carting it's contents away).

Little things like:
a) don't put your name and address on your luggage tags; there are spotters
in airports and baggage handlers, that look for this information. Instead,
use PO box or business address, and hide your home phone # inside.
b) Have a relative or neighbor wave goodbye from your front porch when the
airport shuttle van picks you up, so the van driver (and anybody else
watching - who follows these vans) think the house is still occupied upon
your absence. If you can't do that, let your 'small talk' give the van
driver the impression that your son, daughter, mother, father , etc. remain
in residence. (Van drivers have been known to sell info on empty houses -
especially if you give them a small tip ? ).
c) Make sure you have random timers turning inside lights on and off
throughout the evening and a radio on and off throughout the day.
d)When making reservations at hotels and motels, don't give them your
residence address either, a PO Box is your best safety net

You see, most people don't do all the little things like the examples above,
and then wonder WHY ME? after the burglarly.

Then, when you have taken precautions, put it out of your mind - forget it -
don't worry - or paranoia will set in..
