The pair should be slid around as a unit, correctly separated.  The guide
gives that separation.

Could well be for most people, who have better access to tools to make 
templates (just use a CAD program and print on Vue Graph material) than 
to tools to properly measure and cut notches.

Well, you could measure from the base notch to the edge of the window and
from the near notch to the edge of the window and the two measurements 
should match.  This may have been what Steve was thinking when he thunk it 
up.
