>>Slide Judging #101 - A Refresher Course by Steve Kiesling

Including:

>>Technical: Is the exposure correct? Is the subject in focus? Is the
              slide properly mounted?

Personally, I'm very hard on all of these aspects. Without all three,
there is no reason to enter the slide in a competition. And it is this
that makes them so important.

Technically sub-standard slides are fine for an individual's collection
- they will always bring back memories of an occasion. But they are not
approprate for entry into competitions.

Occasionally, incorrect focus or exposure can result in an artistic
result. But then, they will now be the correct focus or exposure for
that result, so the technical criteria stand.

With mounting, there can NEVER be a reason for entering a slide with
vertical mounting errors. There can NEVER be a reason for entering
slides with different scales in the chips - increasingly common with
twin derived rigs with zoom lenses. There can NEVER be a reason for
entering a slide with twist between the chips.

So, whilst I can accept exposure or focus settings that are different
from what I would have expected under certain circumstances, I will mark
VERY LOW for mounting errors. If the author needs help with mounting, I
am always happy to provide it, but correct mounting is so fundamental to
comfortable viewing that is is essential that effectively un mounted
slides are weeded out before accepted slides are shown to the public!

Anyway, that's how I see it - but then I do end up projecting the show,
so anything I can do to reduce the work involved....
