Cropping

Can anyone help me with a question on cropping slides?
Had to crop down some stereo slides; could think of no better way to do so 
than to apply Chart-Pak graphic artist's line tape directly to the film chips. 
Applying tape directly to the chip concerns me, but using a piece of dark 
paper did not appear dense enough for the job.
