Masking down close-ups: an idea...

Hi all,

When I worked at a PR firm, we made "Pan" shows that were
panoramic slide shows using 3 projectors (9 dissolving, actually)
side by side. When a shot spanned the three slides, for a widescreen
effect, we sandwiched a "fade" into the mount with the film chip so
that, for instance, the right side of the panorama would be blackened
gradually into the left side of the middle, etc. to line up perfectly. We
also used similar masks to project in irises, half-frames, or any number
of shapes.

SO, as a cheap alternative to producing many different size mounts, and
an easier, more accurate alternative to cutting aluminum mounts or
masking with tape... I propose producing film masks corresponding to
several window depths that could be sandwiched into a regular mount
with our close-up views. These could just be heat-sealed in or taped
into regular cardboard mounts. If you were using an RBT mount, you could
pin-register the mask, and then wess-tab the regular chip , or use
the pins from another mount in the other channel for a more accurate
setting. Could these be made cheaply enough to produce windows in a
broader range of depth than just normal, medium, and close-up?

I'm definitely not an expert, and I'm probably overlooking some problems...
Getting the separation correct for several different depths is one that comes
to mind immediately...
what do we think?
