Waack nomographs, etc.

hello all

well, having (mostly) lurked for a couple of years, i finally took the
plunge, and bought a nice little Kodak from Jim Hollis. He is a very nice
guy, and gave me a 2 hour stereo lesson with slide examples taken with
(only) some of his many cameras.

The Kodak is kind of frustrating, since it is basically a mildly
adjustable point and shoot, from my point of view. In my initial shooting
efforts I have been hampered by the lack of 1 sec through 1/25 speeds.
Exposures at f11-16 in the shade (Provia 100) really called for slower
speeds, confirming my impression that the Kodak is basically a 'hand held
in bright light' kinda camera. (at least for max depth of field and
'near-far' compositions) Maybe experience will improve my skills.
I think it is a decent camera to start with, as quite a few folks seem to
do. I already lust after a TDC II or even a Realist 2.8. I will shortly be
hearing from Dr. T about the necessaries. Can this be the beginning of
_obsession_. Lord preserve me. I will let Kodaluck do my first roll and
hope the slide scratcher is at lunch.

Now for my real question. While doing my homework i got the 'Stereo
Photography" book by F.G. Waack, (from Reel 3D) which grows on one with
repeated reading. Unfortunately, it looks like an offset of a xerox, and
many of the diagrams in the back of the book are illegible to me, in my
newly bifocalled state. Does anyone have a reference or source or copy of
the nomographs in 71,72,73,74, or their equivalent.

viz:
p.70-- "stereo base dependant on Near Point Distance with normal Focal
Length"
p.71--" Stereo Base dependent on Near Point Dist. with interchangeable
lenses for size 24x36"
p.72--Stereo Base dependent on Near Point Diference with interchangeable
Lenses for size 6x6
p.73--Depth of Field in Macro and Micro range, Stereo Base, and Exposure
factor dependant on enlargement factor

It is hard enough to figure these graphs out without the additional
problem of being unable to resolve the numbers.

I even tried to set some of them up as equations on log/log coordinates
in Mathcad, but they all came out as straight lines, and i know they
should not be linear near the origin.

Is there a more user friendly version of these relationships in graphic form?

Next question: I do a lot of free and crosseyed viewing. Of slides, and
prints. I intend to head for the country this weekend and do a bunch of
slide bar view camera work in Polaroid while also putting my new/old Kodak
through its check-out paces. I can work out the base separations using
the 1/30 rule, but my question concerns viewing.

How do you control (if you can) the window during free viewing. Does one
develop exquisite control over the divergence or convergence of gaze, or
is the window established by the distance between the prints or
transparencies when viewed. I have never paid attention to window when
free viewing, just holding stuff up until i can 'lock on' to the stereo
image, and then moving things around until it looks 'right'. I like
cross-eyed best, especially for larger prints.

Final question: I intend to do more slide bar 35mm, and am considering a
7 perf camera. I can't find anything useful on the FED in the archives
(BTW, the 'glimpse' search engine is great, try it) and i can't find a web
page for FED using various webfinders. How are the optics and mechanics?
I already know the automation is a pain for anyone used to more
control/choice.

Has anyone tried the Macromax stereo viewer by Emoscope? Expensive,
focussable, multi-element. basically two 5x loupes covering full frame
35mm. It has "three dimensions" of adjustment, presumably for inter
ocular distance, x, and y mvt. The single barrel version is highly
respected as a loupe.

Thanks in general, for the wonderful information and friendly style
available on this list. I read dozens of 'em, and this is the most
informative, and friendliest by far, even when we are castigating
collectors and wishing for more affordable Realist 2.8s.

best wishes, to all,
