rainbow

Since we are talking about atmospheric phenomena (loosely), I just
put a picture that I took last year up on bobcat. It can be
accessed via the Web at:

http://bobcat.etsu.edu/~wier/

or in the ftp area via anonymous ftp (on bobcat.etsu.edu) as:

pub/photo/photo-3d/images/photo/ouraybow.jpg

Description:

Just after one of the usual mountain thunderstorms last spring/summer
in the Rockies, there was about the brightest rainbow I've ever
seen - it was a triple arc! I took some pictures, and somewhat
inadvertantly got a "shifted foot" hyper stereo. Sticking them together
via Photoshop, I've made up a 3 panel view - cross eyed on the left,
freeview on the right.

There is some retinal rivalry since the clouds were *really* moving
when I took these. Also, since this is somewhat hyper, it appears that
the near end of the rainbow is a bit closer (right end) than the far
end. From this particular perspective, the left end comes down INSIDE
the bowl formed by the far mountains (13,000'+ peaks) and co-incidentally
there is an old gold mine there. Sometimes the locals tell tourists
("Flatlanders") that the way that the old time miners 100 years ago
located pay dirt was to watch the rainbows after storms, because they
were attracted to the metallic ores :-)
