Women in 3D

George's post was very interesting, particularly since I have been doing some
research on the social context of 1950s 3D photography. Lately, I have been
collecting images of women represented in 3D photographs in the 1950s, as
well
as ads showing women in "glamour" poses, used to sell 3D camera equipment and
Hollywood films.

Looking back through photography magazines of the 1950s, it's rather obvious
that photography in general, and 3D in particular, was an "old boys'
club." I
don't state this in a derogatory way, but as a characterization of the social
reality of the time. Harold Lloyd was not only a prominent amateur stereo
photographer; he was also Imperial Potentate of the Shriners!

I strongly believe in "freedom of expression" and the right to present
material
free of censorship. I also believe that a public presentation subjects the
presenter to the possibility of public critique. When I offered such a
critique
(in this very forum) two years ago, I was threatened with a defamation
lawsuit.

George is correct in stating that the demographics show an increasing
representation of women in this field. (I wish the same could be said for
ethnic
minorities.) IMHO, public presentations should reflect this change by showing
sensitivity to the more diverse audience - not only in the images, but in the
language and tone of the narratives that accompany them. See y'all in
Rochester.
