One disadvantage for a non-summer date is that probably some people
(like those of us in academia) would have a more difficult time
getting away from work. On the other hand, I would not mind a 
convention in Jan/Feb/Mar somewhere WARM! But if you were to use
Orlando or Anaheim, you are talking big bucks!

For many years, the ACM Computer Science Convention (SIGCSE) was held
in the coldest part of the USA during the coldest part of the winter.
I could never find out for sure, but I suspected that at least part
of the reason was the availability of cheap convention facilities (for
example, I once went to one in Indianapolis in Feb - it was -30 degrees
F. wind chill factor walking the 4 blocks to the convention center :-).

I personally found the one in San Antonio a few years ago very 
convenient (although a bit hot). But I heard a number of vendors
griping about the low attendance.
