Animal with Three Eyes
- From: P3D Paul S. Boyer <boyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Wolfie writes from Australia about a New Zealand reptile with three eyes.
He calls it a "lizard," but it is actually *not* a lizard. It is the
Sphenodon, or tuatara, a true "living fossil," the only living
rhynchocephalian. That means that it is the sole survivor of a whole
reptilian order.
The third "eye" is merely a light-sensitive area, and does not form an
image, so it is virtually useless for sensing depth.
There are many arachnids with more than two eyes. I have no idea how
they perceive depth, and I have never seen one holding a stereoscope.
