Aren't the bulbs (halogens anyway) rated at 2.5V?  Don't the NiCads hit
closer to the "rated" value (and doesn't this make the bulbs last much
longer)?

NiCads usually also have the characteristic of a flat voltage curve during
discharge, so one would have a more consistent color characteristic  during
usage than primary cells would -- making compensation (the blue'ing) easier
to do effectively as well.

One of Dr. T.'s transformers would be even better though..... :-)

P.S. - Despite what I said above, I use Alkalines because I don't have to
       remember to charge the batteries, and at PriceCostco they are relatively
       inexpensive.
