Re: PHOTO-3D digest 1296
RE: MTF Curves
An anology to this mechanized method of testing (lens test charts were
subject to eyeball analysis via a microscope and the judgement if
something was resolved really..with things like false resolution where
lines show up again after resolution seem to have been reached) is
perhaps the use of square waves and an oscillosope to test a hifi
amplifer. The degree of rounding to a sine wave was the faiure to pass
the test. By the design of the contrast and line spacing of the MTF
target on gets a similar output showing "roll off". Since perfect amps
and lenses don't exist hardly ever does one get the square wave
reproduced. BobH
(While makers hate to publish MTF or resoltion because it doesn't tell
all about a lens quality..the British Weekly Amateur Photographer used
to publish MTF curves as did Photography when they tested cameras. These
courtesey of a London camera shop that had bought a machine. BobH)
The inability to tell much from these curves about the lens is the
reason they Popular Photography has the color coded scheme which
includes observer critiques of prints as well as other test data. This I
think devised by retired Kodak Optical engineer. BobH
